Who am I to take away another person’s life that has taken one himself? But at the same time if I don’t more will die. How do we choose between what’s right and what’s wrong? How do we know what’s right and what’s wrong? I can say I support the death penalty because I’m not the one doing it. And if I were the one to do it then I will have done exactly what that person has done. I’ve taken a life. So what justifies taking the life of someone that has taken the life of another? Voltaire once said; “It is forbidden to kill; therefore all murderers are punished...” Why does death have to justify a killer? I may believe we should have the death penalty because it serves justice, and I may believe that we shouldn’t because so many innocent people die on death row. So what do I really believe? I believe that logically the safety of the few must be sacrificed for the safety of the many. Abolitionists may say that the death penalty is “inherently immoral” because governments should never take human life, no matter what the crime. But that is an article of faith, not of fact. The death penalty honors “human dignity” by “treating the defendant as a free moral actor able to control his own destiny for good or for ill”;...
