Lately, there have been many news stories about young adults who have committed suicide due to cyberbullying. In today’s society, the internet has become very common and it plays a major role in teenagers’ lives. They can shop, express their thoughts, and even make new friends online. It is also important to note how easy it is to distribute information across the internet in very little time. While there are positive outcomes of the internet, there still exist dangerous aspects to it, such as bullying.
The concept of illegal downloading and the various perspectives of the issue have created a lot of controversy. Copyright is an issue that is continuously growing and expanding as the internet is developing. Whether or not we control this epidemic is up to the government and whether they want to spend their time and money to catch the “criminals” that commit these “dreadful” acts. The perspective of citizen one presented in the source is explaining that the government should be protecting the individual’s rights to their own personal and private property. She is stating that someone who illegally downloads media should face the same punishments as those who steal physical property.
Censorship in America today has gotten way out of hand. When it comes to watching television, reading a book or magazine, listening to music, or buying products, citizens should be able to make these decisions for themselves. Where do we draw the line with censorship? After all we are Americans and we do have rights. Although censorship is needed with issues concerning children, majority of censorship is a violation of our rights because what one person may find offensive and obscene does not necessarily represent that all citizens.
Technology is moving and advancing very fast and any attempt to curtail or limit accessibility only serves as a fuel to move faster in order to circumvent any such internet roadblocks. The bill also allows the persecution of any one who assists and provides a way to bypass the system, but this will simply drive the cyberworld to find more obscure means to fight for their freedom to free media and information. The internet community, which includes us and everyone else in the world, sees this as a curtailment of freedom of expression and the repression of creativity rather than being its protector. Mark Lemley, David S. Levine, & David G. Post in their article Don't Break the Internet called SOPA "not only [a violation of] basic principles of due process by depriving persons of property without a fair hearing and a reasonable opportunity to be heard, it also constitutes an unconstitutional abridgement of the freedom of speech protected by the First Amendment". Many fear that this could cripple internet technology innovation as well as
Tevin Hutchinson 11/10/2012 English 102 Technology plays a huge role in our everyday life. I do believe that technology has made our lives easier, but it also has made us more dependent on the technology itself. When using the internet for a dictionary you could easily get distracted. Anyone can put anything on the internet, so what you find might not be accurate. Most people find that looking things up on the internet is distracting because you are already on the web so why not check YouTube for a funny video, or update your status on the social network.
731-745. Print. "Is Google Making Us Stupid?" By Nicholas Carr informs us on the ways technology is negatively effecting us as a society. By using the internet as a resource, we depend on it by quickly finding answers to all our questions in a matter of minutes which changes how we process information.
Kirsten Laman ENGL 1301-61507 Professor Jackson 30 October 2014 Cognitive Effects of the Internet The book The Shallows by Nicholas Carr states that the introduction of the internet into society has had a profound effect on our culture. In other words, the internet has affected the way people think, read, and remember. The rapid access to tons of information has also affected people’s behavior making them less patient and less productive. According to Carr, “The Net commands our attention with far greater insistency than our television, or radio or morning newspaper ever did” (117). In today’s world, the internet has become essential to work, school and entertainment.
Drug addicts and alcoholics should not involuntarily be committed to a hospital for assessment and treatment. All individuals have the right to self-determination and their personal autonomy to live their life the way they choose should always be respected. Individuals of age should have the liberty to decide what is best for them without government paternalistic interference. If interference is required because an individual’s actions harm others, legal actions should be taken to punish them lawfully by still respecting their rights. The idea of legal paternalism in ethical reasoning is somewhat of a kind gesture from the Government to try to help individuals from themselves in the assumption that those individuals do not know what is best for them.
(Reaves) Furthermore, juveniles to be tried as adults is that it'll not only make them understand the consequences of their action, but also prevent them from committing any further crimes, knowing fully well that they are not given any special consideration because of their age factor. It will thus lower the crime rate in society. When there are harsh punishments meted out on children who commit crimes, others will learn from their mistakes and deter from doing anything drastic like such. (Reaves) For example, when my niece sees one of my cousins get into trouble for something they did. For instance, take something that does not belong to them or break a toy that is also is not theirs, its helps and understand what my niece should not do.
The proponents for banning guns, and the defensive use of a gun, cannot show any proof of taking banning guns will slow the crime rate with tighter gun laws. I’m all for strict and tough enforcement of gun laws that prohibit criminals from using them in the commission of a crime (cite, Blanks 1990) Because if they (criminals) feel they can take advantage of individuals or families who are consider unarmed. These are individual and families are easy prey for them. The criminals will not hesitate to harm or
