Should the national curriculum be kept, enriched and expanded? The national curriculum was established to ensure the same standard of teaching across the country. It was established in 1989 and covers all learning for children aged 5-16 who attend state schools. However, a debate has arisen surrounding this topic. On one side of the argument are politicians such a Michael Gove who believe the national curriculum needs to be reformed and limited. However, Edwards and Kelly argue that the national curriculum should be an adjectival curriculum. An adjectival curriculum will describe rather than prescribe children’s educational experience and be expanded. I believe the national curriculum should be kept, enriched and expanded. Included in the national curriculum are; English, Maths, Science, Design and technology, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), History, Geography, Art and design, Music and finally Physical education. However, also advised are PSHE, citizenship and MDL. The national curriculum should be kept because it provides reference points of achievement for children parents and governments. Therefore, children and parents know when they child performing well. Also, ‘staging posts’ of success within the National Curriculum provide benchmarks which inform policy decisions. It should be kept because it measures standards. Parents and policy-makers can use the data from national measurements to provide frameworks for improvement strategies. Standardisation offers targets against which poorer-performing schools can set themselves. Therefore, everyone has an idea of what stage the child needs to be at. Finally, the national curriculum should be kept because it sets standards for the teaching learning programme.
