Should smoking be allowed in public places? One of the most common problems today that are killing people, all over the world, is smoking. Many surveys, studies and scientific research have proved that smoking is damaging to health. Over the last few years, people may have noticed more “no smoking” signs have cropped up on parks and beaches. They’re part of a larger trend banning smoking at outside, public areas. However, there is a fact that, despite knowledge about smoking damage, the number of people who smoke is increasing gradually. Thus, there are several reasons why smoking should not be allowed in public places, such as: serious effects in health, environment and society. Firstly, smoking can cause serious health problems to the smokers themselves and to those inhaling secondhand smoke. Tobacco smoke contains many harmful substances including a lot of carcinogens and nicotine which is addictive. Smoking can cause cancer, emphysema and heart disease. It can also shorten peoples’ life by up to ten years or more. Breathing tobacco smoke can even change blood chemistry and damage blood vessels. Moreover, every cigarette damages breathing and scars peoples’ lungs. Smoking causes: Pneumonia, Asthma, and Tuberculosis. Besides these effects, smoking is also one of many factors including weight, alcohol consumption, and activity level that increase your risk for osteoporosis, a condition in which bones weaken and become more likely to fracture. Secondly, smoking not only affects the smoker’s health, it also greatly influences the surrounding atmosphere. Smoke and cigarette butts affect the environment the most, resulting into air, water and land pollution. Major impact on the environment is due the production of the cigarettes. The land, which is used for the cultivation of tobacco plants, could be better used for producing food for the third world
