Should Same Sex Marriage Be Legalized? Should same sex marriage be legalized? Marriage, is a ceremonial union between a man and a woman as husband and wife. What is so different about same sex marriage? Same sex marriage is closely defined to marriage, but a ceremonial union between a man to man or a woman to woman. Same sex marriage was commonly portrayed as “abnormal” or “unnatural” to those who did not support or recognize same sex marriages. Those who argued against them only insisted that marriages are only between a man and a woman. Some even think that it can be harmful to their own children. However if same sex marriage laws were legalized, a person who may have trouble coming out or expressing themselves would not have such a hard and difficult time. There are also many beneficial things that could happen if same sex marriage was legalized. For example, same sex couples get financial benefits in some states and many gay couples from all around the world adopt children who were abandoned or put up for adoption. Abandoned children would have homes regardless the gender of their parents. Although there are people who do not support same sex marriage, not too many people know how beneficial same sex marriages are to the society. In the United States, there are actually only 19 states, including the District of Columbia, where same sex marriage have been legalized, some of which are, California, Hawaii, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington. Eight of those 19 states’ same sex marriage laws were passed through court decisions, eight passed through state legislatures, and three passed through popularity votes. On the other hand, same sex marriage has been banned in 31 states, and some of those states which are still under appeal. Overall, United States has not fully legally legalized
