For the last few decades, the important of universal health coverage has been increasing considerably, especially among the developed countries. The term universal health coverage is defined differently from country to country. According to the world health Assembly Resolution 58.22,2005, the definition of universal health coverage is “ensure all people have access to needed services without the risk financial ruin linked to paying for care”. There are many conflicted ideas about whether to allow citizens to get free healthcare services or not. To advocates of universal health coverage, they believe that all citizens should have an equal chance to get free access on universal health coverage. Nevertheless, to the people who stand strong on their feet against the universal health coverage perceive that the concept of receiving free access to health care services is quite unfair to health-conscious citizens. Hence, This controversial perception has been put on floor for discussion and debate. This essay aims to explain that we should eliminate the use of universal health coverage or free access to healthcare services for a number of reasons. To begin with, one of the major arguments to defend against the use of universal health coverage leads to the raise of tax rate. In other word, if a country starts to provide universal health coverage, government’s spending will be increase. Thus, government needs to increase the percentage of tax rate or collect higher amount of money to balance with the growth of spending. Since every single person get free access to universal health coverage and share the cost equally, it is quite inequitable for someone who works very hard and they end up paying for health care coverage for someone who works less or does not work at all through tax collection.
