A Series of Unfortunate Events It has been almost a year since a mentally ill youth took the life of twenty innocent children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut. Last week, the latest news reported a military man, who went on a shooting rampage in Texas at Fort Hood. Other memorable tragedies such as the murders at the premiere of The Dark Knight Rises movie in Aurora, the Columbine high school massacre, or even the Virginia Tech massacre bring back to light a highly debated issue, guns and who should possess them. Despite these tragedies, deep division has kept new gun safety laws from passing in congress. Our current gun control laws are ineffectual with ambiguities that currently allow people to purchase guns with minimal restriction. Lobbyists also hide behind the second amendment saying it is the constitutional right to bear arms; however, the Second Amendment itself talks about “militia”, an army that will protect the “state” and has rights to bear arms for this specific purpose, not individuals claiming their own defense from imagined enemies. The country has progressed since the time when the Second Amendment was needed to consolidate U.S. boundaries and protect itself against foreign aggression. Ultimately, the reality is that a gun is a lethal weapon; its function and design is to kill. Gun control reform will ensure that there will be further stringent checks to decrease further incidents of violence. Reform may not be the total answer to the problem of mass shootings, but it should be part of any meaningful response to so many tragedies. The bottom line is current gun control laws are inadequate.
