Should animals have rights? According to the website Merriam-Webster, animals rights means animals should have their right to be protected from exploitation and abuse by humans, especially the rights not to be exploited for human purposes. Animals should have their rights because they are a portion of the earth as well as human beings. People who support animals rights say that researchers should not continue to use animals for animal testing. Proponents who support animals such as monkeys and apes, which are our closest relatives, argue that animal testing is the best way to prevent the side effects and promise the efficiency of drugs for humans. However, Bantwal (2011) provides an example of Thalidomide Tragedy, a sedative drug typically used to cure morning sickness; even though it passed thousands and thousands of animals testing in Germany, it still caused tens of thousands of birth defects. This is not just a special event. Bantwal goes on to say that because the metabolism systems of animals are different, even if the result of animal models are positive to animals such as mice, rabbits, and monkeys, that is not to say that it will perform the same result for human beings. People are still exposed to high risk for taking medicine. Therefore, the scarifications of animals are unnecessary. Scientists and researchers should come up with alternative ways to evaluate the efficiency of drugs. In addition to the animal model for drugs, more and more scientists report to be against the animal experience in the cosmetics industry. Cosmetics are an additional function for people so that the animal experience might not only waste countless innocent lives, but also result in the abuse. Since animal experience is not the only option to reach the same results of allergy testing, people should stop using animals such as rabbits and mice for the allergy
