Short story - is a work of fiction that is usually written in prose, often in narrative format. A short story usually deals with a few characters and often concentrates on the creation of the mood rather than the plot. The Elements of a Short Story 1. Characters a. Protagonist- the hero or the principal character. b. Antagonist- the anti- hero or the main opponent of the protagonist. c. Foil- the opposite ( in character trait) of the main character; helps to develop some aspect of the main character. 2. Setting- Contains information about the physical, socia;, or temporal context in w/c the story occurs. 3. Plot- the main story that starts with a conflict, develops into climax, and ends in the resolution of the conflict around which the story is developed. 4. Theme- the dominant universally accepted idea in the short story. 5. Point of View- the voice from w/c the story is told. A first person account uses the pronoun I. The narrator is a character in the story. In the third person singular point of view, the narrator is uninvolved observer. He tells what he sees, hears, and knows but from a limited view only. The third person omniscient point of views allows the narrator to look inside the minds of all the character in the story. Frame story, also called frame tale, overall unifying story within which one or more tales are related. In the single story, the opening and closing constitutes a frame. In the cyclical frame story—that is, a story in which several tales are related—some frames are externally imposed and only loosely bind the diversified stories. For example, in The Thousand and One Nights, the frame consists of the story of Scheherazade, who avoids death by telling her king-husband a story every night and leaving it incomplete.
