He thought of teaching the young and influencing the kids into getting interested in ballet style of dancing. He first established a school for the young on January 2, 1934. During 1930,s and 1940,s he worked as a choreographer at musical theater. In 1935, his influence led to a professional company focusing only on ballet, American Ballet. With not enough success, Balanchine decided to take some action and move the company to Hollywood in 1938.
Van Goethem was born on June 7th, 1865 and began as a student at the École de Dance in Paris, but by 1880 she had bee studying as a dancer at the Opéra in Paris (1). Degas was greatly interested in dance, so he spent hours attending rehearsals and studying the dancers. He drew Maria, both clothed and nude, from various angels. Numerous charcoal and pastel drawings have been found showing Degas’s meticulous care in preparing for the actual sculpture. One of Degas’s only publicly exhibited sculptures at the time, it was shown at the sixth Impressionist exhibition in 1881 and was encased in a glass box.
Music at the Turn of the Century While walking around the Stephenville Historical Museum there were two things in particular that caught my eye. They were both record players that dated back to the early 1900s, and one was even said to be from 1905.The phonograph was invented by Thomas Edison, patented in 1878, and comes from the Greek word meaning sound and is literally translated to phone. Also, instead of vinyls like we know today, cylindrical tin foil was used to make the disk that would produce sound. When lines and grooves were cut or etched onto the disk, a needle would trace over the lines and the vibration from this process created sound. Soon after the invention caught on, the tin foil was replaced by cylindrical cardboard coated in wax, and eventually vinyl which of course is still used today.

Guys and Dolls were popular. This is a form of dramatic art, in which every song, dance, and line of dialogue developed the plot. Gene Kelly choreographed several dance and drama films, one called “An American in Paris” (1951).
