Introduction Shipper Manufacturing Company is a manufacturer of electrical products, laminated materials, and specialty products. The Advanced Products Division (APD), which manufactures the specialty products, has reformulated its corporate strategy. As a result, its manufacturing strategy should also be revised. In the past, APD has manufactured custom products in low volume for its customers. The division plans to gradually add higher volume products for multiple customers. As a result, changes will be needed in manufacturing to effectively compete in the new environment. Time Context April, 2007 Central Problem What objectives should be adopted in manufacturing with respect to cost, delivery, quality and flexibility? Secondary Problem How should these objectives in manufacturing be achieved through process, organization, equipment, workforce, capacity, scheduling, quality management and production and inventory control system? Objectives Specific To convert a system into producer-designed, so that the cost will not necessarily passed to the customer. Measurable Attainable To make the quality remain the same, and products are being same standard to a producer-designed system. Responsibilities The APD should determine their manufacturing competitive priorities and competitive capabilities. Time Specific Implement an effective manufacturing strategy over the next 5 years. Areas of Considerations Strengths The APD responds to individual customer design requirements and tailor its new products into unique customer applications. Weaknesses Since APD mainly focused on customization, there will be lower volume produced and might not meet the customers’ demand.
