Kelsey Wielgosz Exchange Club Scholarship “America’s Youth and Community Service: Shining the Light of Volunteerism” Community service is when one person helps out another person out of the kindness of their hearts. So what exactly does “helping someone” entail? The word “help” used as a verb means to give or provide what is necessary to accomplish a task or satisfy a need. Helping others has been what makes America such a beautiful place. It is a value that has been taught from the time this country was founded. People have lent a hand to those less fortunate who were seeking a better life. There is no better place in this world than America, the place that you can get help with just about anything a person may need. America has displayed outstanding leadership qualities when it comes to servicing the needs of others, not just within this area, but also throughout the entire country. When Hurricane Katrina hit, people from all over came to New Orleans to lend a helping hand to people who had lost everything they ever owned and even their loved ones. It was a sad day for the entire country, but nobody just sat back and mourned their losses, they got right to work. It is amazing how people pull together in times like that. It was not just one group of people who decided they were going to do something about the disaster. Caucasians, African Americans, Latinos, short, tall, fat, skinny, the old and the young, they all pitched in. What was really moving was that the people who you would think would never be able to help much, actually made a world of a difference. Young people are often looked down upon as people who sit back, are rebellious and aren’t very receptive to the needs of others. This stereotype could not have been proved to be more wrong. Handing out food, comforting a family, and putting on fundraisers were just a few tasks done by kids
