Shining Path (Sendero Luminoso, SL) Kelli C. Limber ADJ/215 06/10/2012 Wayne Scott Patch Shining Path (Sendero Luminoso, SL) Sendero Luminoso or Shining Path is a terrorist group that is being followed by the US Department of State and is listed on their website. This group originated out of Peru and became active in 1980 and is labeled as a communist organization. When Sendero Luminoso was first started its stated goal was to replace the Bourgeois government with New Democracy (Wikipedia, 2012). Bourgeois is defined as a person with social behavior and political views held to be influenced by private-property interest (Merriam-Webster, 2012). This group believed that imposing a dictatorship over the proletariat, or the working class, would lead to a world revolution. They hoped that these events would lead to a pure communist world. The group Sendero Luminoso was founded in 1960 by a man named Abimael Guzman. Guzman was a professor of philosophy at a University. Shining Path, also referred to as SL, is based around Marxist ideas. Guzman established followers over the years and what began as a small group grew into a large terrorist army which reverted to guerrilla warfare to get there point across. When the group first started out they targeted local authorities like police, local mayors, and local leaders. After years they began to broaden their targets an go after well to do political leaders that were higher in the chain. It is estimated that approximately 70,000 people have been killed between the government wars with the Shining Path. Marxist theory was created by a philosopher by the name of Karl Marx. Marxist theory or Marxist philosophy is a theory that is based on the point that there is no private property and everything is equal.
