Shear Force and Bending Moment Experiment
Objective:
To find out the relationship among shear force, bending moment and the perpendicular distance.
Apparatus:
1. The provided apparatus is a shear forces apparatus which is one set of 80mm x 50mm x 38mm aluminium section with 2 adjustable span support.
2. A shear force dynamometer is provided to get the shear forces’ data.
3. 2 sets of weight hangers are provided.
4. A set of weights is provided.
5. And a 2m measuring tape is provided.
Procedures:
For concentrated load:
1. The 2 edge supports on the base of the structural test frame were set up at a distance of 800mm from edge to edge.
2. The shear force apparatus was placed on the supports.
3. The weight hanger was placed 270mm from the support.
4. Adjust the screws to horizontally align the beam.
5. Make sure the shear force and the bending moment reading is zero on the dynamometer.
6. The weights were put on the weight hanger and the shear force and bending moment is noted.
7. The percentage error for each set of reading was calculated.
For symmetrical load:
1. The 2 edge supports on the base of the structural test frame were set up at a distance of 800mm from edge to edge.
2. The shear force apparatus was placed on the supports.
3. The weight hanger was placed 100mm from the support.
4. Adjust the screws to horizontally align the beam.
5. Make sure the shear force and the bending moment reading is zero on the dynamometer.
6. The weights were put on the weight hanger and the shear force and bending moment is noted.
7. The percentage error for each set of reading was calculated.
