In this story juxtaposition used in the story is between the animals and inmates or portrayed pictures between the same person's lives at different points. The reason why this technique is used is because the author is illustrating important themes about reader’s sympathy, humanity, and imperialism. The first evidence of juxtaposition was shown by the author through inhumanity. The statement that "We were waiting outside the condemned cells, a row of sheds fronted with double bars, like small animal cage" (Orwell's Para 1). This paragraph indicates that the prisoners were dehumanized.
The Shawshank Redemption is a feature film concerned with the repression of individuals within an institution- a prison in this case. It is concerned with routine, forced conformity, power abuse and the struggle of hope to exist in such a lifeless world.Characteristic of this "feel good" genre film, the "good guys", Andy Dufrense, and the "bad guys", the warden and his guards are also constructed. The viewers response to the above elements are shaped by the use of film language (lighting, camera angles, selection of shots, music, etc), but also by character conflict. Shawshank prison is presented to the viewer in a way such that we are positioned to regard it as oppressive, enforcing conformity and routine and removing all elements of individuality within a person, "you come here for life and that's exactly what they take from you". The opening shots of the prison as Dufresne arrives to begin his double life sentences, are ones of an expanse of gray lifeless concrete blocks and bars.
The responder feels sympathy towards him like anyone would when you see an animal wet and shivering in the corner of a cage. When the page is turned the responder gets to visually see the emotion displayed on Hugo. It further gives the responder to feel even more sympathy towards him and the idea of Hugo like an animal wet and shivering in the corner of his cage is brought back to the responders mind. This is shown from the crossing of the arms to keep warm and the jumper pulled over his mouth. Brian has drawn Hugo in the cage showing the bars to express the idea of isolation and imprisonment.
Jamie’s supernatural aid is Basie who gives him valuable information like always drink boiled water, it kills the bacteria in the water. Red is Andy’s helping hand: he finds and gives Andy the rock hammer and lots of beneficial suggestions. Both heroes enter this new world from a portal. While Andy’s gateway is physical, Jamie has more of a mental threshold. Andy walks through the gates of the prison and finds him self in an unfamiliar environment.
The Shawshank Redemption Elisabeth Hartmann Essay 22 June 2012 In the film “The Shawshank Redemption” directed by Frank Darabont, there are both visual and verbal techniques used throughout the film. The strong idea, which relates to those techniques, is the idea of hope. Hope is the desire of something to be true. The two main characters, Andy Dufresne and Red have different ideas of how the idea of hope is perceived. Some of the techniques used to show this are lighting, narration/voiceover and costume.
The river imbedded in the story is recognized as a territorial division between good and evil. A river could also be interpreted as a continuous flowing act much like life itself. However in "All Quiet on the Western Front" the river in fact symbolizes a natural break between land of ruthless violence, and a land of worthier entities including beautiful women, houses and luscious landscape. The soldiers are forbidden to cross the river to visit the land side of better things but, "on the other side... there are women" (p.143), whom beckon them to go cross over to them. The men become very giddy, nervous and, "are all glowing and full of a lust for adventure" (p. 146).
Darabont’s fictional retrospective provides much drama but not without astounding the audience with such precision and prowess only he could complete. The drama of the film is reflected through the various episodes of dramatic tension in the picture. As a convicted felon who had reached his thither, Andy confides within realism to keep him sane, he partakes in hobbies that serve as a constant reminder that there is hope and things to live for outside prison. Andy's overwhelming desire to escape prison is fuelled by the various prospects that lay beyond the foreboding desolate prison walls of Shawshank. Andy in his escape venture needed an alibi; he needed to create an alias to protect his true identity as a man in need to escape.
Existentialism examines human nature and makes human beings question what it means to be human; existentialism makes us questions our choices and actions as humans. To give meaning to our existence we must experience freedom. The movie, Shawshank Redemption, embodies a lot of the themes of existentialism.
