Sexuality in Lebanon Despite the fact that Lebanon is considered a leader in civil society development and activism in the Arab region, women in Lebanon are not completely free to exercise their sexual freedom although the situation in the region is a lot worse. Women in the Arab world lack simple human rights standards and they suffer cases of honor crimes, female genital mutilation and other humiliating issues. The deeper one investigates these issues, the more we find that human rights are greatly violated due to the lack of gender equality. Women's choices are quite limited because the male dominance affects every aspect day to day life. Pressure mounts up due to society basic requirements and expectations. It is expected that women looks and sexual orientations are clearly defined and those who dare violate these expectations suffer the terrible consequences of rejection and extreme humiliation. Another type of social pressure is the need to keep silent about rape and sexual harassment. Women do not reveal these crimes due to the fact that when exposed and the crime is publicized, this will bring about humiliation to the whole family and eventually women pay the heavy price of such a "scandal". In Lebanon, women have been gaining many rights like 1953 – voting; 2001 - equal pay; 2004 - equal serving in government in terms of medical coverage and hospitalization)(1) , however, women are still amply discriminated against in the Personal Status Law, the Nationality Law, the Penal Law, the Labor and Social Security laws and Employees' Laws and the Terrestrial Trade Law(2) The official side of the country's decision makers, the Lebanese government, still fails to create legislation on gender equality that provides legal framework for improving the situation of women in terms of domestic violence, marital rape, sexual harassment and basic rights for LGBTQ
