Lois Jenson’s Case – Lawsuit Against the Sexual Harassment in the Minnesota IVTEC Iron Mines – as it was fictionalized in a movie “North Country” Globally, the words of “sexual harassment” has become the term that people get quite used to. If we give some times to think about it, the harassment itself might have been experienced by us in a moment that we did not realize at the first place that it was. It could be when you were young in school or even just last week on the job. The harassment comes in different forms such as sexual, physical and verbal. People do not see the harassment in the same perspective, because what may come as an inappropriate to one person may be viewed as appropriate to another. Our society has many questions regarding sexual harassment: what can be considered sexual harassment? What is it exactly? Some doubtful acts or behavior may be perceived as normal to one individual while it is unwelcome to the other. A sexual harassment can be defined as “uninvited and unwelcome verbal or physical behavior of a sexual nature” (Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary 2004, 252). It can affect people of all layers of ages, races and gender. Woman is considered as the weaker individual in many countries. This gender issue in many patriarchal cultures across the world somehow leads the fertile environment for a sexual harassment against them. The fact of sexual violence against women is not a rarity. Women always say to themselves, “It will never happen to me.” or “It might have something to do with yourself to feel of being harassed or to let people harass you or, even the worst, to invite people to harass you.” Sexual violence will not go away if we continue to let it happen.
