IPPF’s Vision 2000 Strategic Plan moved the focus from demographically-orientated family planning programs to advocacy for and provision of services to women, men and adolescents within a broader sexual and reproductive health framework. Sexual and Reproductive Health refers to: • a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being • in all matters relating to the reproductive system and its functions and processes • so that men and women are able to have a satisfying and safe sex life, • freely and responsibly decide if they want children, • and the number, spacing and timing of their children. Informed Choice Men and women have the right to be informed and to have access to safe, effective, affordable and acceptable methods of family planning of their choice. Access to Care Couples also have the right of access to appropriate health care services that will enable women to go safely through pregnancy and childbirth and provide them with the best chance of having a healthy baby. Contraceptive Counselling Contraceptive counselling is a two way process of communication by which the counsellor or practitioner helps clients to identify their reproductive health needs and make the most appropriate decisions concerning contraceptive practice.
