SEX EDUCATION: SHOULD IT BE TAUGHT IN SCHOOLS? Sex education is a study on issues relating to human sexuality, including human sexual anatomy, sexual reproduction, sexual intercourse or other sexual activity, reproductive health, emotional relations, reproductive rights and responsibilities, abstinence, and birth control. Sex education is still being treated as a taboo in most places due to religious belief. However, teenagers nowadays are becoming more sexually active at a younger age due to the influence of social media. Most of them are not aware of the consequences that they might face and the best way to have safe sex. Therefore, sex education should be taught in schools as it is the most reliable way to convey accurate information to students, help students to understand themselves better, reduce unwanted pregnancies among students and lower the risk of getting sexually transmitted diseases. First of all, sex education should be taught in school to convey accurate information to students directly and completely. According to Cheong (2012), sex education should be improved by providing more information on the consequences of having sex as a warning or advice to others. A comprehensive sex education should not just cover the danger of sex before marriage, but it should also accommodate detailed knowledge on safe sex. This statement is supported by Radhakrishnan (2012) as cited by Ambika (2012), where he states that sex education should go beyond sexual abstinence messages and advice. According to Wolfgram (2013) as cited in Students take action for Sexual Assault Awareness Month, introducing comprehensive sex education in schools can prevent child sexual abuse while prevention, education and increased awareness can lower sexual violence in society.
