Mentoring involves a lot of discussions and open conversations between the mentor and the mentee, therefore the mentor should know how to effectively get the message across to the individual with ease. This is especially important during the giving of feedback to the mentee. The mentor must be able to relay feedback and remarks constructively and positively without demeaning the mentor’s self-esteem. Being able to communicate well is at the upmost importance within my job role. In retrospect it’s equally important that I understand what is being communicated to myself by these health care professionals using medical terminology, for example to ask ‘what does that mean’ if the terms are unfamiliar, the ability to listen, retain and respond appropriately to the information received. Effective Leadership Styles in Nursing Being an effective leader require an individual to posse skills and techniques needed to influence others to accomplish a task or mission. These leadership skills are taught and learned over time. Huber (2010) mentioned that leaders arise in a context, and they are said to be “made,” not “born.” People admire leaders who are dynamic, charismatic, enthusiastic, and who also exhibits poise and confidence. These characteristics along with other leadership qualities are desired traits of an effective leader. Leaders have explicit or implied power.
A leader is also someone who can empower others as well as encouraging them to explore their own skills and limitations. A good leader should also be able to lead by example through turbulent times, and have the ability to influence change. The evidence for this has come from observing my own manager who I have perceived as being visionary and supportive in a time when our current climate within the health service is demanding constant change to achieve an improved service. On completion of this course I looked back and realised I’d perceived my manager’s leadership style to be democratic, believing him to able to guide his team, giving them all their own responsibilities in order to arrive at a shared vision. In actual fact I now believe his leadership style to be Laissez Faire.

Mr. Branson uses the Leader-Member Exchange Model, as is common with individuals who participate in the transformational leadership style, to challenge and build each team member up to organizational standards. He places trust in them on large projects and delegates work, after being immersed in it himself (Nahavandi, 2012) 2. Transformational leaders need to be skilled at change leadership. Given that Branson is a devoted visionary and constantly launching new initiative, how does he overcome employee resistance to change?
