Running head: ETHICAL LEADERSHIP Ethical Leadership: The Servant Leader Leadership ethics is a relatively new focus for leadership scholars. People want to know that when circumstances arise, the person in the leadership position will make the right decision. Numerous recent scandals in America have lead more people to focus on how leaders behave and their virtuousness. Servant leadership, developed by Robert Greenleaf, is one perspective that addresses some of the ethical aspects of leadership. Greenleaf expresses the importance of the leader’s ability to empathize, listen, and show unconditional acceptance to all followers (Northouse, 2010). Servant leadership also seems to be compatible with most religions and philosophical theories (Wallace, 2007). As mentioned above, listening is an important attribute of servant leadership. Communication is an important component of effective leadership. In order to communicate properly, one must listen. In order to grow as a leader and manager, you must learn how to be an effective, compelling communicator. A leader who has strong communication skills is able to connect with others and build a strong relationship which is what servant leadership is really based on. It is important that servant leaders listen in order to be able to identify and clarify the will of the group (Northouse, 2010). In the health care setting, listening can be extremely important. Doctors and nurses need to understand the ailments of the patient in order to be able to tend to their needs. Psychiatrist, psychologist, and counselors are all known for their listening skills. Rephrasing what a person has said is a good way to clarify what a person is communicating. This also lets the person know you understand what they are communicating. Many people just want to be heard and if you give them fifteen minutes of your time and really listen,
