Anthony Edward Sowell, also known as The Imperial Avenue Killer or The Cleveland Strangler, born August 19, 1959, is a 53 year old serial killer. He has been convicted, charged and sentenced to death for the murder of 11 women. Sowell also served in the military. In 1989 was Anthony’s first, that the police know of, attempt to try to rape and kill a woman. Then in 2007, is what the police believe, Sowell started killing the women he brought back to his home on Imperial Avenue. During Anthony’s childhood he was raised by his single mother. Anthony’s mother had three children, Anthony a daughter and another son. Anthony’s mother also took in her seven grandchildren. Sowell’s childhood consisted of watching his mother beat on his nieces and nephews while he and his brother watched, from a different room. Anthony gained the trust of one of his nieces over the period of a couple of months then he began raping her at her tender young age of eleven. This went on for about two years on a daily basis. Since his niece never told anyone about the sexual abuse Anthony kept doing it. This behavior started the obsession tendencies he had over women. Sowell never had really good relationships with women throughout his whole life. So at some point he felt like he had to rule, dominate and train women to be and act how he wants them to be. At the age of 19, Sowell joined the United States Marine Corps. Anthony joined the Marine Corp because he knew that in order for him to keep his obsessions under control he needed structure and regimen. He attended recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island in South Carolina. Anthony also trained as an electrician. On July 13, 1978, he was assigned to 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. Sowell spent time overseas and Japan. Then he later returned to the U. S. for three days before his discharge in 1985 for alcohol and drug use. Anthony
