Sensory Integration Inventory for Individuals with Developmental Disabilities PSYCH 4213 – Psychological Tests and Measurements Ms. Brooke Beams East Central University 11/20/2012 FUTURE CAREER FIELD The career path I have chosen is Occupational Therapy. I hope to enter the Master’s program this next fall. I chose the Sensory Integration Inventory for Individuals with Developmental Disabilities (SI Inventory) because it was the only test in the Mental Measurements Yearbook that is specific to Occupational Therapists. As an Occupational Therapist, I hope to work with people, especially young children, who have developmental disorders and would benefit from my help. PURPOSE OF TEST The SI Inventory test is not a standardized test nor is it to be used to evaluate an individual’s current level of disability or to compare individuals. The SI Inventory is used by Occupational Therapists and support staff to see whether an individual would be a good candidate for sensory integration treatments and usually takes about 30 minutes to complete. As stated in the test, it defines Sensory Integration as the ability of the central nervous system to organize and process input from different sensory channels to make an adaptive response. (Reisman & Hanschu 1992) There is no special equipment needed to administer the SI Inventory, however, it is necessary for the staff administering the test be familiar with the client and know their usual or typical behaviors so that the individual can be scored correctly. All items measured have a sub-category except for general reactions. Tactile covers how the individual responds to sensations of the skin. Staff will observe client responses to skin sensitivity, how they process information from touch or pressure through skin, along with personal space issues.
