Seniors Should Age In Place

The elderly help pave today's society by giving knowledge and wisdom to the younger generations. Yet as soon as an elderly person becomes perceived as a burden, people are ready to ship them off into a nursing home.
Most people think, “what if my mom or dad falls?” “I don't trust my parent at home alone when it comes to cooking”, “what is there for my mom or dad to do at home besides get into a mess?” “What am I suppose to do with them?” for all of those questions and statements there is an alternative option. “Aging in Place” is the term used for seniors staying in their own home as they get older. This paper will argue that seniors should age in their homes rather than being relocated to institutionalized care.

Seniors should stay at home for as long as they can because it could be cheaper depending on where a senior lives. Aging in place may be more cost effective. Long term care can charge between $1000 and $8000 dollars a month. Many seniors own their home so mortgage or rent is not a worry to them. For seniors living in apartments the cost of living may still be cheaper. Most one bedroom apartments range from $600 and 800 a month. Other amenities such as hydro, heat, and electricity are usually included in rent (when living in an apartment.) A senior aging in place while living in an apartment only has to worry about the extras such as cable, internet, and phone.

The moment a senior gets admitted to a nursing home he/she immediately loses all privacy. Most seniors that move into LTC can't afford a private room. When having to share room space and a bathroom with a complete stranger, one has to adjust. For example, some people enjoy sleeping in the nude.
