Ray Nagin-New Orleans mayor Former New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin has been convicted of bribery, money laundering, and other corruption charges (Associated Press 2014). He allegedly took thousands of dollars, went on free vacations and trips, and was given truckloads of granite for his family business (Associated Press 2014). Ray was mayor after the hectic Hurricane Katrina made landfall in Louisiana in 2005 and destroyed most of New Orleans (Associated Press 2014). He had fought so hard for the federal government to help New Orleans in their time of need, yet he was making unethical choices governing the city. I find this very interesting and disturbing since, who is to know if his fight was for the people of New Orleans or for himself and his family.
He received much physical help from wife Eleanor. He also remained active in politics. During this time, Roosevelt was governor of New York and was a perfect candidate for the presidency. (Black, 191) However, he was focused on the citizens of America due to the devastation caused by the stock market crash of 1929, which was the start of the great depression. There were other causes of the great depression and not just due to the crash of the stock markets.
Lincoln was often criticized when he was President and even labeled as a tyrant for his flagrant ways by the Democrats (History Channel). After his assassination he was honored for his civil liberties and became to be known as a very tolerant President and did the best to run his country in the most humble and honorable manner. Today, we find that President Lincoln’s assassination was a loss for the country despite the respect and acknowledgement he received that was not given to him while he was in office. It’s a shame that America did not see how he truly cared about each person who lived in the United States of America and wanted nothing but the best for the country and those living in it such as the slaves in which he helped to gain civil rights for during the Civil War. “When a man contributes something of vast importance to a nation, he is set above others and revered” (Schwartz 29), one great man and President who defines that phrase is President Abraham Lincoln, who was taken from the nation way too soon and is the President I most admire and that is admired and modeled by many politicians and citizens of this glorious nation.
Another experience that made him eligible for the job was that he served in the 88th-94th congresses as a member of the Senate. Then, in 1976, he was chosen to be Jimmy Carter’s running mate when Jimmy Carter won the Democratic nomination for president. The pair won the election, and Mondale went on extensive travels, advocating the administration’s foreign policy. Some weaknesses that Ronald Reagan has that I can exploit are that he raised taxes without telling the nation, he believes in trickle-down government, he gives a lot of false information while delivering speeches, and he is outdated and too elderly to be
Frances Perkins believed that this illness changed Roosevelt's personality and in doing so, made him into a better man. Although confined to a wheelchair, Roosevelt returned to politics in 1928 to help his friend, Alfred Smith, in his unsuccessful attempt to beat Herbert Hoover in the presidential election. The following year Roosevelt was elected as governor of New York. From a lot of influence of others turnt Roosevelt into one of America’s most progressive politicians. The Wall Street Crash in October 1929, created the worst depression in American history.
Augustus did anticipate the possibility of revolt from the senators who had been removed from the Senate. While expelling the excess senators he wore mail under his robes, along with wielding a sword, was surrounded by what he considered to be his most loyal friends in the senatorial class, who conveniently happened to be rather large senators. Simply removing, or pressuring Senators to resign wasn’t enough change for Augustus; he also made being part of the Senate more convenient (as if their life was extremely difficult), meetings of the Senate now were to only be held at the most twice a month, and that in the month of September and October those who need attend were drawn by lots, and this number was only the amounted needed to pass decrees. On issues Augustus found to be of relative importance he would ask senators at random what their opinions on the topic were, to keep the senators on their toes and to ensure that they truly were keeping roman interests at
His courage on the battlefield and in political office will forever stand the test of time. He believed in his country, and that everyone deserved to be free inside of it. Noted as being extremely convincing, Hamilton convinced congress to vote for Thomas Jefferson in the extremely controversial presidential election of 1800. This convincing nature would prove to be his downfall however, as the loser of the election; Aaron Burr killed Hamilton in a duel on July 12th1804, after years of being bitter enemies. Alexander Hamilton is an American writer that my classmates and others would be interested in learning
At the age of 28, in 1910, Roosevelt was invited to run for the New York State senate. By running as a Democrat, he broke his family tradition, in a district that voted Republican for 32 years. With the help of his name, he ran and won by a Democratic landslide. When he became a senator, he went against the Democrats of New York. This angered the Democratic leaders but gained him the notoriety of the nation and some experience in the tactics of politicians and interest.
The second theme is the pitfalls of temptation. This is that the money got made a man ruin his two weeks until he was free, the lust to have Everett's wife penny, the mayor pardoning the boys so that he could get reelected, Tommy selling his soul to the
