S‘Selfishness is the greatest curse of human race’. Based on what you have read so far in Animal Farm does it seem likely that Utopia can ever exist? Explain your opinion with examples from the novel itself. I think George Orwell was trying to show the effects of selfishness throughout Animal Farm. He wanted to show that wanting more could change someone’s personality and what that person or people represent. Utopia is an ideal and perfect place of state where everyone lives in harmony and everything is for the best. I agree with the statement, ‘selfishness is the greatest curse of human race.’ This is because wanting more can lead to one going against their principals. This is perfectly illustrated in Animal Farm by George Orwell. When Old Major sang Beasts of England he sang, ‘Hearken well and spread my tidings of a golden future time.’ The lyrics mean the animals should listen well and spread information about a golden future time for the animals. When Old Major sang these lyrics, the reader senses that he may have not meant for the animals to have a golden future time, but instead this golden time was intended for the pigs. The word ‘tiding’ gives Old Major a God like status. This is because a lot of the great leaders used the word tidings and this was commonly found in the bible. This makes the reader react to Old Major in a positive way, he is seen as the leader of the animal that, at this point in the book, you want to be free from Jones the farmer. This also makes the reader aware of a potential uprising from the animals. When Moses the raven says, ‘in Sugarcandy mountain it is Sunday seven days a week … lump sugar ends and cakes grow on trees.’ This cunning lie tricks the animals and motivates the animals to work harder, because they believe that the harder they work the more reward Sugarcandy Mountain will offer them.
