Name: Teacher: Class title: Date: 2009 Self evaluation of Speech #2. I failed miserably! I was not effective! I will improve! These are my thoughts upon review of my recorded speech given on EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing). It is evident that I have a lot of room for improvement. This is duly confirmed, supported, and very well documented via welcoming feedback from teacher and class mate’s written critiques. I stood in front of the class, comfortable with my speech topic, made good eye contact, and somehow managed to motivate the curious crowd to sit and listen to my seven minute- twelve slide power point presentation. I will explain to you how I failed to properly prepare a well organized speech, How I was not an effective speaker, and what I will improve upon for a great speech next time, I failed miserably. What was expected from me? Was a well organized, three to six minute informative speech, delivery spoken from brief notes, with a maximum of six slides too much to ask for? What they got was twelve information packed slides, resulting in PowerPoint poisoning. According to Essentials of Public Speaking, PowerPoint poisoning is a term coined by Dilbert cartoonist Scott Adams, which refers to a text- induced coma that listeners experience when there are too many PowerPoint slides or the slides are too long, have too many bullets, or are too confusing. The textbook also states that according to a survey of business people who watch more than 100 PowerPoint presentations per year, sixty two percent got annoyed with speakers who read from their slides.
