Which one is more important to students, self-confidence or specific knowledge? Different people have different opinions. Some say that it is more important for a teacher to help their students obtain self-confidence than to teach specific knowledge. Also some hold the opposite attitude. From my point of view, both of them, to help students get self-confidence and teach them specific knowledge are necessary. They are of equal importance. Firstly, a student must have enough confidence to conduct his/her study and to do other things. Only believe himself/herself, can s/he do things better. For example, a new student wants to learn swimming. As long as S/he holds the attitude that "I can make it" in mind, s/he will be not afraid to get down into water and soon s/he can control the swimming skills. It is inconceivable that a student that does not have confidence and always thinks that it is difficult to swim can learn it well. We can see that self-confidence can encourage students to handle a specific knowledge as quickly as possible. Therefore, a teacher must help students gain self-confidence. Secondly, specific knowledge is important to students as well. Grasping specific knowledge enable students to go on something smoothly. Take one of my classmates, Jim, for instance. He is familiar with the computer software and he can produce some small software when in college. He learnt a lot from our professor, Mr Lee, during the four years in college. Now, Jim has become an excellent programmer who is good at many different kinds of software. When encountering complicated problems, Jim always has confidence to solve.
