The nursing theory that will be discussed in this paper is the Interpersonal Relations theory, created by Hildegard E. Peplau. Hildegard E. Peplau is a woman of many credentials (Rust, 2004). Her work, Interpersonal Relations in Nursing, has been identified as one of the first published nursing theories (Johnson & Webber, 2005). Before Peplau created Interpersonal Relations in Nursing, she devoted her life to working in private practice and hospital nursing (George, 2002). Peplau was also involved in nursing research, and teaching; this, combined with years of practice in psychiatric
Reflection as a learning tool allows me to identify the positive and negative aspects of my practice and to draw upon previous experiences and apply them to new situations “Reflective practice has, however, the potential to help practitioners in all fields unlock the tacit knowledge and understanding that they have of their practice and use this to generate knowledge for future practice”. (Schutz, 2007 pg.26) The clinical competency I have chosen in this report is Phlebotomy. As part of my role as a health care support worker within a District Nursing team Phlebotomy is one of my primary duties. The clinical skill I have chosen to reflect upon within this account is venepuncture. Confidentiality has been maintained throughout within this assignment and all names and locations are changed in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council code of conduct (2008, Section: Confidentiality) and for this purpose I have chosen to name the patient as Mrs Jones.
In this essay I have chosen to reflect on the clinical skill of administration Intramuscular (IM) injection .During my first clinical placement I became involved in this widely used method of drug administration. The first stage of Gibbs reflective cycle requires a description of events. While on my clinical placement I was ask to administer IM injection to a patient. I performed this procedure under the supervision of two qualified nurses including my mentor. The patient consented to get the drug administered by a student nurse.
Lastly, a reflection of findings will be discussed as to how nurses could contribute the information from the two interviews into their own professional growth and development. The first interview question pertained to the interviewee’s role in their current position and their educational preparation. The CRNA interviewed had an extensive emergency and critical care background, which applies greatly to his position today as he works in several areas, including the ICU, of the hospital where he is employed. The nurse educator was previously a nurse practitioner in a family practice office where she learned the patient teaching aspect that transitioned into her educational role today. Each interview participant explained the unique contributions they each made as nurses and brought to their interdisciplinary team.
Background Stress in nursing is problematic as it affects the quality of patient’s care and, the impact of nurse’s burnout could be serious. A review from Griffiths and Mimura (2003) presented several researches on strategies, like, education, role playing, nursing method...; it claimed cognitive strategy was the effective one among the others on approaching stress in nursing. In fact, the data could not possibility reflect such result. The source of invalidation could be unveiled from Griffiths and Mimura (2003) cited Crockett and Lee (1994), the research of cognitive techniques study only conducted for two weeks of 12 hours in total. Despite the conclusion was rated as effective or, the result of the statistical test was scored as significant; within this brief timing, the effectiveness or accuracy is questionable.
Like I previously mentioned, I make use of the must up to date nursing research and evidence based data to improve my critical thinking reasoning and skills. In my opinion, nurses demonstrate scholarship into practice when they question certain products, medications, look up actions, adverse effects and drug interactions. When they look up laboratory results and are able to tell which is abnormal and when nurse’s question doctor’s
Negligence and malpractice are increasing within nursing fields even though nurses and students who will become nurses are educated about their legal and professional responsibilities and limitations. Negligence is a failure of fulfilling the responsibilities that the nurse has which results in malpractice. A nurse can be sued for malpractice when she fails to take care of the patient; it results in patient’s injury, however we should keep in mind that not every case ends with the injury, but still it is a malpractice. Many nurses are not fully committed to perform the skills they should, and they enter the profession only because of benefits. Malpractice can be increasing because of a severe shortage of trained nurses, and it happened because of a few factors: nurses are required to work longer shifts; they can lead to fatigue and increase the risk for an error; also short Nursing courses providing degrees with no sufficient time to train nurses results in malpractice.
The nurse mentor was been informed about the type of dressing and intervention that should be provided to the client, along with the explanation with the rationale to the procedure that I have decided to use. The decision was been made based on the background theory of Braden scale and my experience. The nurse orients and started to explain the different types of assessment tool that could be use to asses a client with pressure ulcer emphasizing one tool. In addition, the nurse includes the awareness
