Seeing Ourselves, Chapter One – Critical Thinking Questions (Page 5) 1. Why do people in the United States tend to think of the operation of society in personal terms? My belief is that it is more of an everyman for himself scenario. The social ties one has is mostly with their families and people they have known for a long time. With the fast pace of our current society and cutbacks from all sources, it is always a thing of by the time our wages come in, it goes out and leaves us very limited time to meet people. For a society to work effectively, it has to be used by everyone. It should run like a well-oiled machine, however, going back to the previous statement, everyone looks out for themselves. My speculation would be that sociology developed because someone saw a many people doing the same thing and then noticed that is spread to another group of persons, then to another and they wanted to know why it was doing that, since it was not for the person’s survival, but rather for attention or any other of a number of factors. 5. I guess the biggest factors of the sociological imagination that would play into the poverty is focusing on the circumstances as to why we have poverty, how it was shaped into our society that it has become a “norm” and then look for the solution to poverty, not by changing people by changing the structure of how we live. If we could change a lot of the way in which our society handles structures such as this, we may get a better handle on the US as a whole and truly making this greatest country to live in. 6. I am very comfortable with it. I find myself observing people all the time. I find individuals very unique, not just in personality, but in the way they communicate, including body language. Individuals are just that, individuals. No one will ever conform to one common set of rules. If they did, then we would lose a lot of jobs. Well actually pretty much all jobs that are not in manufacturing. They do create how they live, the circumstances in which they love and what they want to do with their lives. The meaning of life is abundant and some people take it without looking back and others are just happy to survive another
