Baker, CPP, PSP RESEARCH PAPER April 19, 2011 After my analysis this paper will demonstrate the use of the concept that is believed to be beneficial from the use of the Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) model. The facility that I have chosen is a local charter high school which I am employed as the Dean of Students. This plan is based on the theory with the proper design and effective use of the environment that can reduce the incidence of fear and crime, and make an improvement on the school grounds. CPTED is a powerful concept that may be used to improve the productive use of school space. In the school environment, the underlying objective of CPTED is to help school administrators attain their primary goal of student achievement and a positive environment, with the added by product of improved security and loss prevention. CPTED is a small part of the total set of concepts but it is an important concept for the school and community because it emphasizes the integration of security concepts into what has to be done anyway. Crime Prevention through Environmental Design is also the study and design of environments to promote desirable conduct while discouraging antisocial behavior. Conventional security measures can play important roles, but in isolation they can undermine the ambiance of an environment and give a school the feel of occupied territory. Security guards are unlikely to have much of an impact on verbal abuse or graffiti, and they certainly will not be able to turn around an otherwise poorly managed, academically uninspiring, or socially alienating school.
