The Secrets in America “In proportion as my racial group was being made confident, comfortable, and oblivious, other groups were likely being made inconfident, uncomfortable, and alienated”. In the article White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack, Peggy McIntosh talks about the privileges that whites have over blacks. Whites are taught to ignore the fact that they enjoy the privileges that blacks do not have because we live in a society of white dominance. They refuse to realize that their “natural” position of power has been talked about. The author tries to connect with the readers so that we will begin to think about the issues rather than putting them to the side and continuing to live their lives in denial. McIntosh points out whites enjoying conferred privilege but refuses to acknowledge it, stating mainly blacks are not free. Peggy also breaks down the daily effects of white privileges into class, religion, ethnic status, and geographical location. For example, walking into a restaurant asking to pay before eating or even going to clothing store to try on clothes and being accused of stealing. Yes this happen to a friend of mind. He was downtown in the loop area where all the stores are at and it’s him and his girlfriend. He takes her to the Coach store for her birthday so that he could buy her a birthday present so he did. They then left to go to another store and she’s trying on clothes and he is waiting on her outside her dressing room. She had about four to six items she was trying on so this other customer thought that her boyfriend was putting clothes from the store
