Hagar Amer SID: 800130191 Second Language Acquisition (ch.2 p. 20-30) Second language acquisition has roots in other fields; for example, language teaching, linguistics and psychology. On the other hand it has a deep relationship with the child learning acquisition as both researches are stemming on the same question about language acquisition. Moreover SLA is related to other disciplines like third language acquisition, heritage acquisition and finally, bilingual acquisition. The relationship of each discipline to SLA is different. Some have derivative relationship and others have parallel relationship. For example, the relation between third language acquisition and heritage language is derivative relationship while bilingual has a parallel relationship with second language acquisition. Multilingual acquisition is a complex phenomenon as it is based on all factors and processes related to second language acquisition and bilingualism as well. It is associated with the complicated factors that are possible during learning multiple languages. Moreover, to some extent language involved will influence third language acquisition. For instance, from Selinker and Baumgartener cohen (1995), an man who speaks English as native language and he comes to France trying to speak German, he says "Tu es mein fax bekommen". This sentence is built on German grammar but with French grammar. Heritage language is the language someone learns at home as a child which is a minority language in society, but because of growing up in a dominant language, the speaker seems to be more competent in the latter and feels more comfortable to communicate in that language. Polinsky labels it as a continuum that ranges from fluent speakers to barely speaking individuals of the home language.
