Even though they are not harmful in small quantities, they are harmful if they exist in large quantities. Farms use fertilizers containing large amounts of nitrates and phosphates, so they can build up water near industrial-scale farms. In a body of water in which nitrate levels have risen to high levels, these chemicals can cause excessive algae growth. When the algae die and decompose, they deplete the available oxygen in the water for fish, causing them to die. In humans, drinking water that is high in nitrates can interfere with the Boyd’s ability to transfer oxygen O Phosphates and nitrates are implicated in a number of health and environmental issues, an therefore the government should develop and implement regulations on both phosphates and nitrates. How does nitrate get into my drinking water? The major sources of nitrates in drinking water are runoff from fertilizer use; leaking from septic tanks, sewage; and erosion of natural deposits. While nitrate can get into our drinking water in a variety of ways, the government also has many methods of regulating Nitrates and limiting the danger. The major sources of nitrates in drinking water are runoff from fertilizer use; leaking from septic tanks, sewage; and erosion of natural deposits. Congress has passed the Safe Drinking Water Act in 1974 to try to keep contaminants out of drinking water. Also they determine that 10 milligrams of nitrate was the legal limit for water. So Congress passed the Safe drinking water act. This law requires EPA to determine the level of contaminants in drinking water at which no adverse health effects are likely to occur. These non enforceable health goals,
