School Uniforms Prioritize Safety and Academics As the first day of school approaches, students excitedly plan their outfits. Making sure that every minor detail is in accordance with one another, the students place a great amount of time and focus into the clothing they wear. Once the school bell rings, one would assume that the students transfer their focus from their appearance to their studies. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Because of the amount of concern students have with their style and fashion, the students often place their academics as a secondary priority. About fifteen minutes into the first class period, at least one-fourth of the students will be sent to the main office to have their outfits adjusted because of multiple dress-code violations. At this point, part of the class is missing, and the students that remain in class are still concerned with each other’s clothing. The distractions caused by student fashion hinder the educational process, and learning in the classrooms becomes ineffective. School attire can be very expensive at times. Each year, students go to store after store to find the perfect “back-to-school” outfits. From expensive designer jeans to color coordinated sandals, students’ parents spend dollar after dollar to make sure that their child is properly equipped for school. However, with a strict dress code, the cost of back-to-school shopping can be drastically minimized. According to an editorial written by Kent J. Fetzer in the Northwest Florida Daily News, “Many parents favor a uniform policy because it could make school clothes easier and cheaper to buy.” Enforcing students to wear school uniforms financially benefits the family of the student because purchasing a set of clothes that are to be worn continually throughout the school year is much more feasible than purchasing many new school clothes.
