Generally schools require students to wear uniforms for the desire to increase the students’ academic levels. Many critics rebuttal that uniforms “infringe on student’s First Amendment right of free expression” (Kelly). Although the use of uniforms might take away some of a student’s freedom of picking what new outfit to wear every morning, to exercise the use of uniforms in a school environment gives the students more time to focus on their homework after school rather than
Darwin High School’s dress code gives students the freedom to express their personality but also sets boundaries for students to comply. Education is a school’s primarily function but secondarily is platform for socialization where clothing plays a major role. Darwin High School’s dress code inhabits student’s individuality for future life. Although uniforms create a sense of belonging in a school, Darwin High School’ dress code allows students to feel individual from others. We think of Japanese students as being intelligent but never think of the disadvantages. In “Strengths, Weaknesses, and Lesson of Japanese Education,” James Fallows states “Pass with four, fail with five,” mentioning the hours of sleep they need to have more time to study. In Japanese schools the sexes don’t have equal advantages. Woman are expected to take care of their children’s well-being and education, and men have to take care of the economic side. Assimilation has good intentions and focuses on strict academic criteria, however there are many students who do not fit the mold of the assimilated classroom. Pluralism allows for an environment that encourages the differences in race, culture and ethnicity to create a classroom that shares and learns from each other. Students with disabilities also benefit from a pluralism setting because students are encouraged to accept and respect differences.
Students resort to violence and theft simply to obtain designer clothes or name brand shoes. This instills a fear among the students and teachers. It is no secret that violent behavior has become a problem in public schools. For this reason more and more public schools are entertaining the idea of uniforms to get the minds of their students off fashion and onto their education. Some experts believe uniforms promise to cut down crime and reduce violence, but only if we take away that students individuality and freedom of expression.
Also families are affected by this too, as they would have to buy additional clothing on top of casual clothes for their children.
