It is also very important that children are shown what is expected of them this is also very beneficial to behaviour management. Many rules are seen as targets by the children. For example rather than having ‘Do not throw litter’ it would be ‘I/we will not throw litter’. This also encourages the children to behave and the children will know that this is what is expected of them. The code of conduct should also be displayed in various areas in the school so that the children remember them and they know what is consistently expected of them.
Teachers should treat people as individuals and make sure a positive culture of equality and diversity is promoted. In order to promote this students should always feel included – being treated fairly and equally will promote a safe feeling and a good learning environment will be gained. The teachers had to be responsible for students’ physical safety, safety from insult and diminishment, and even “there was safety to take risks, to push beyond what you can comfortably do at present” (46). Only such a guarantee could bring students psychological and spiritual comfort in their studies. Beside safety, the respect of people toward others was also important in a democratic classroom, especially toward students of different ethnicities. “From what I could tell, it meant many things, operated on many levels: fair treatment, decency, an absence of intimidation, and, beyond the realm of individual civility, a respect for the history, the language and culture of the peoples represented in the classroom” (46). Ethics and values are the foundations which make students responsible for upholding the integrity of the school, while providing a healthy surrounding community in which they can reside and learn. They are the set of rules which assures the governing academic body that each student would get out what they put in to their education which is exactly what they contribute. Violations of the Student Code of Conduct will be deemed misconduct and shall be subject to appropriate disciplinary action.. As students of Monroe High, we deserve basic rights as young adults. Being in public, students deserve freedom while maintaining discipline. The students should the right to dress, act the way they want to, as long as it is appropriate. Students should make decisions for their own self that benefit themselves and their education. With the variety of classes and activity offered, students should be able to take the classes they want, and the classes they think will benefit them in the future.
The last essential right a teacher has in the classroom is to receive help and cooperation from parents and administrators when it is needed. To parallel Teacher rights the Students also have essential rights under the assertive discipline model. Students have the right to have teachers who help limit inappropriate, self-destructive behavior, and the right to know and choose how to behave knowing of the consequences of their behavior will automatically bring. In a classroom that follows the assertive discipline model the fore mentions rights are carried out and applied by three major strategy components used by the teacher; rules, positive recognition, and consequences. According to this model students need limits that will guarantee their and other students’ rights.
Lucinda Griffin Zero Tolerance The zero tolerance policy was put in place to help keep students and their schools safer. This policy is causing problems with students. The policy is here to keep unsafe objects and violence out of school, to help keep everyone safe from harm, and bullying. The zero tolerance policy has become unfair to the students and teachers.
