The modernist project, the Schminke house that was created in 1933, was designed by one of the leading advocates of modern design, Hans Sharouns. Inspiration behind the piece was the Villa Savoye, created by Le Corbusier. The Schminke house was referred to as ‘organic architecture’, Hans Scharouns approach to the structure was to shape it by its use and the movement which will be created throughout it. The materiality of the house consisted mainly of steel for structure purposes and glass; the different colours of steel within the structure and the large area of space gave it an industrial feel. The interiors of the house have various soft vibrant colours, which contribute to the soothing, warm atmosphere created throughout the house. There is a relationship between the Villa Savoye and the Schminke house, one mainly being there both modern inspired designs. Scharoun’s design can be seen as the opposite of Le Corbusier’s ideals. Throughout the structure there are pools of space which are defined by built in sophisticated furniture, which are also filled with light, whereas space within the Villa Savoye is defined by walls which appear to be structural and have limited areas where light has the ability to be absorbed. The Shminke house has a projecting terrace which surrounds majority of the house, although it is a part of the exterior, it very well feels as an interior as there is the same strength of light entering the inside as it is on the outside. The main body of the light absorbing structure was positioned facing south, but turned the east and west ends to run parallel to the site boundaries. In 1935 the modernist, Hans Scharoun created the Baensch house, which is located in Germany. There are design aspects that Scharoun took from the Schminke house and applied them to the Baensch house.
