1 Running head: [SCHIZOPHRENIA] Living with Schizophrenia April 13, 2012 2 Living with [Schizophrenia] Schizophrenia affects about 1 adult in 100, which amounts to more than 2 million people in the United States (International Schizophrenia Consortium et [al]. 2009; Perala et. al., 2007). “Nearly 1 million people are treated for schizophrenia each year, with about one third receiving hospitalized care” [Nevid, 2012, 443]. Schizophrenia is an interesting mental disorder. I know someone who was diagnosed with schizophrenia as a teenager. I am interested in learning more information to share with this person. I read three articles on schizophrenia; one article discussed the advantages of using a smartphone on schizophrenic patients. The second [article] discussed the causes of mental disorders and depression and the third article discussed treatments and diagnosing mental disorders in teenagers. Can smartphones help people with schizophrenia? One writer writes “Psychiatry is employing smartphone technology as an innovative tool in the assessment and treatment of schizophrenia and other serious mental illness” [Zeev, 2012, 926]. Ben Zeev also reports he and his colleagues evaluated a range of approaches, including the use of mobile phones to gather information about patient’s symptoms, moods, and medication use.
