This is different from selection – though information gained through the selection process should be useful during the assessment. ●Initial assessment is a process, not a single event and uses a range of methods which help prospective employers and providers to find out about learners. This process helps learners to find out about themselves and their programme (what they will learn, and how). The outcomes of initial assessment help to inform the individual learning plan (ILP). In fact, it would be difficult to supply all the information needed for an ILP without carrying out a thorough initial assessment.
Inclusive learning should promote positive behaviour and conduct. A teacher needs to recognise that learner comes with different learning styles and needs. Maslow stated unless certain need are met the learner cannot progress. Malsow ‘s hierarchy of needs theory is: Learners needs have to to be met in order for leaners to be involved and focused on their learning. For individual learning styles to be met, within a good learning sessions a teacher will ensure he/she takes a multi-sensory approach to teaching, this way each learner can work to the best of their ability.
Actively encourage and support learners in becoming independent. Will lead learning “guided” groups, modelling concepts and language that the adult leading the learning has used. Will alter an activity or change the apparatus if an activity does not meet the learners needs to enable them to achieve or exceed the expected outcome. Are acutely aware of learners capabilities/prior learning/understanding and plan very effectively to build on these. The areas that I have assessed as “good” and therefore need improving are: Enable learners to access resources appropriately – I feel that I need to make more time to be able to show the children how they can get the best from the resources that they have available to them.
Normally, (for numeracy and literacy) I support the higher ability group for Numeracy due to the 1-2-1 pupil I support, and the middle group in Literacy whilst keeping an eye on the other rest of group (just in case, but they are normally competent to work independently). When working with a table or a group, there will normally be pupils who are at different levels. That is why it is so important to be able to modify and adapt activities to enhance learning experiences. One important contribution whilst the learning activity is delivered is to ensure that learners understand the learning tasks and to reinforce the teaching points from the input. Being aware of the needs of pupils and the level of support they require, whether learning or personality needs.
Different people adjust to different strategies. Most people adjust to more than one strategy. We just need to identify which ones through assessment. If you know the learning style of the student, it is easier to convey the message you are trying to convey.
By working as a team you can gain valuable knowledge from those who are more experienced than you, but it also allows you to suggest newer and fresher ways to approach learning. Each member or person has their own skill and expertise, communicating with them helps you to learn, build up your own knowledge and know your own responsibilities.By working as a team you will also learn to trust and respect your colleagues, build relationships and build your own confidence. Problems can be shared and solutions can be discussed or suggested. You can learn new skills, take better responsibility of your own role and achieve your end goal more effectively. This is so the practitioner can act on the advice and put it onto the planning. This advice can have more experience in different aspects of the child’s life. This then helps with the care and learning needs of all children as if the child has a disability which affects their learning. The teacher will have to get another professional in that knows what they are doing to help care for the child and help with the child’s learning. This means that the child will be getting a full learning experience and understand the lesson because it is easier for them.
It is at this point that a child is usually referred to the Special Education department and an Individual Education Program is developed for the child. (Bradley et al, 2010) The interventions needed for this level vary greatly and as the general education teacher, you will receive guidance from the special education staff if you have a child on this level. Some of the typical interventions used at Tier Three level are: direct teaching of prosocial skills; changing antecedent conditions to pre-empt behavior issues; and change of placement to decrease stimulation levels.
