The federal government has awarded grants to police departments in excess of $34 billion dollars since 2011 to purchase military equipment. The author believes that this military appearance of the police is pushing the citizens away from being able to trust in the police to protect them during events such as the one in Ferguson, Missouri. While I can see the author’s point of view on this, I can’t help but to disagree. I believe that it shouldn’t matter how the police are dressed or what kind of weapons they are carrying. Obeying the law all boils down to one thing.
If the game continues at Mile High, what suggestions would you provide? Discussion issues include: • the consumption of alcohol; • the amount of time between permitted tailgating and game time; • the amount of responsibility given to each of the schools regarding fan control issues; • the location of locker rooms; • pre-game information/warnings about unacceptable behavior; • etc. 3. Do you think that the fact that the fans who were originally targeted by police were college students as opposed to a “traditional adult population” factored into the action taken by the police? It’s hard to say for sure what was on the mind of the police.
Should Teachers Carry Guns To School? Imagine the idea of being defenseless against an individual possessing the intention of wreaking mass destruction on the students and staff inside of a school. In 1999, Columbine High School, in Littleton Colorado, experienced a tragedy that holds historic importance to the concept of protecting those inside of a school in a worst case scenario. When thirteen students had their life taken away during a school shooting, the idea of allowing teachers to carry handguns during class received more attention than ever. The safety of the students at school may be at risk, such as the school shootings that occurred at Columbine High School.
Jeremy De La Cruz Pre AP English 2B Mrs. Brogan 23 April 2013 Word Count: 500 Will Gun Laws Stop Future School Shootings? The saying “Guns don’t kill people, people kill people” has always been said. With recent school shootings, many people are wondering if gun laws will prevent future shootings. Gun laws will only keep guns out of the hands of bystanders who could stop the shooting, and allow criminals to easily kill innocent children. Gun laws pertaining to schools prevent people from saving more lives and stopping shootings in the making.
This documentary heavily revolves around the idea that the main cause of gun violence in America is due to so many American’s being immersed in a culture of fear. This matter is brought up by Rock Artist Marilyn Manson whos music was targeted by the media in the wake of The Columbine Massacre as a cause of the mass shooting. “It’s a campaign of fear and consumption” says Manson, “Keep the people scared and they will consume”. Moore seems to agree as he plays a montage of TV news headlines that blast viewers with images of crime after crime. This shows the viewer how Americans are not being shown the more important news story’s when a clip reveals “new speedbumps” being setup in a peaceful town in Canada.
The allowance of guns to be concealed by students and professors on public campuses can cloud the campus officers’ duties during these chaotic times, potentially cause mislead shots. Every college campus employees certified and trained security to protect their campus. For instance, if a largely debated rally was to be held in an open college court yard, then campus security would have previously notified, but while this controversial meeting is being held, passionate advocates get too passionate and an altercation occurs. With many students and possibly outside students in an open area, shots can be fired by non certified parties. The act of fired shots in a mix of chaos leads to confusion for the on staff security.
Peter Nguyen 2/7/12 Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at Columbine High School in Columbine, Colorado marked one of the deadliest school shootings to ever occur. Along with many other school shootings, they tend to happen because of the students that have some emotional or mental problems. There have been actions that have been made to enhance the security in schools such as applying metal detectors and hiring school police. This will not stop the school shootings altogether. In order to provide a safer environment where danger can be resolved more efficiently, teachers and faculty should be allowed to carry weapons in school.
On average it takes 15-30 minutes for police officers to get to a crime scene. Taking away the Second Amendment is like taking away the right for citizens to protect themselves. Did you know that currently there are almost 1,700 citizens per police officer? So it’s concluded that the police might not always be there to protect you; that’s why citizens need guns. The Virginia Tech shooting would never have happened if those students were armed as indicated in Document 3.
That’s all I want is just to limit the access that people have to firearms. Another argument would be to not leave people defenseless but as I stated before there are other ways to protect yourself. Right now there is a debate going on about letting people carry guns onto school campuses because of school shootings that happened in “gun-free” zones. I do not think that would be a wise idea because if any little misunderstanding, argument, or dispute went on and someone really disagreed with it, then who knows what would happen. Fights in schools happen all the time, but usually the worst of it is a couple punches thrown.
Since that day, there has been a major outcry to solve the school shooting epidemic. Government should take measures to reduce school shootings by raising the minimum age to purchase rifles to twenty-one years of age, eliminate the loopholes in circumventing the background check requirement for purchasing a gun, and make all gun laws consistent among the states by federalizing gun laws. There will be arguments that some of these measures will make the school environment seem inherently dangerous or that these steps will abridge the Second Amendment rights and that these measures will also compromise individual State’s rights, but there are many examples where laws were made to apply the same to all Americans
