“Say Cheese” By: Alexis Poore Instagram is a free online photo-sharing and social networking website and app that lets its users take pictures, apply filters to them, and share them on a variety of social networking services, such as media sites including Facebook or Twitter. A really cool feature is that it confines photos to a square shape, similar to Kodak Instamatic and Polaroid images, in contrast to the 4:3 aspect ratio typically used in normal pictures that you might take on your phone. Instagram was created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger and launched in October 2010. The app rapidly gained popularity, with over 100 million registered users (and around 90 million monthly active users) as of January 2013. Instagram is distributed through the Apple App Store and Google Play. Users can upload photographs, connect their Instagram account to other social networking sites (which will enable the option to share uploaded photos to those sites), and follow other users' feed. In 2012, Instagram created profiles, which allows users to use their Instagram account like a social media site or in other words they can show more about themselves for other users. The new “profile” that is on instagram gave users a web profile featuring a selection of recently shared photographs, biographical information, and other personal details. The web feed is a simpler version of the phone app, mimicking the look and feel users are already accustomed to. On December 17, 2012 Instagram announced a change to its terms of use that caused a widespread outcry from all of its users. The controversial change in terms stated: "you agree that a business or other entity may pay us to display your username, likeness, photos (along with any associated metadata), and/or actions you take, in connection with paid or sponsored content or promotions, without any compensation to you."
