Analysis of “Save as Many as You Ruin” Throughout life, we are faced with multiple challenges and have to make decisions of either great or less importance. And sometimes we make mistakes when making those decisions. Some of our mistakes can have a great impact on our lives, and if you are truly lucky, you will be given a second chance to - maybe - save what is previously destroyed. If given that second chance, it’s a good idea if you seize the opportunity to change your choice, and this opportunity is what our main character in this short story is given. "Save as Many as you Ruin" is a short story written by Simon van Booy. It is a short story because it has a short timeline and a small gallery of characters. The short story starts in medias res with our main character Gerard leaving his office on a winter night. The events in the story are being represented in a chronological order, but the story also contains a few flashbacks. The narrator in the text is a third person narrator, but is also a personal narrator, who is bound to the protagonist Gerard. The narration is of his inner thoughts and these thoughts are the only ones the reader knows about. Gerard is a handsome man, who used to sleep with a large number of women. He is in his late 30's and is living on Manhattan with his 8-year old daughter Lucy whom he got with a woman named Issy. But at the time he made Issy pregnant, he was in a relationship with another woman named Laurel. She was the love of his life, and the only woman he’d ever came to love, but the relationship with Laurel ended a week after he told her about his cheating, and he then moved in with the mother of his upcoming child. Together they had their daughter Lucy, but only 6 months after Lucy was born, Issy moved Los Angeles to fulfill her dream of becoming an actress. She only got to play a part in a soap opera and was later found dead
