Satisfaction comes from helping others.This is an “elderly home”. In spite of the elaborately decorated walls and kind nurses, disability or dementia, whether serious or not, darken the heart of everyone here. Their sons and daughters do not visit here often because of that, which makes the elderly here very lonely. the repetitive and limited movies and TV shows become more and more boring every day. Looking into their eyes, you can see nothing---blank, emotionless and hopeless.
I, as a volunteer here, was charged with the task of taking Danny, one of the residents in this health center, for a walk and talking to her.
Danny used to be a beautiful model before she got dementia and moved in here. she still loves to be pretty--- wearing neat, colorful and stylish clothes she looks young and energetic. How lovely she is! However, who pays attention to her? Some of her neighbors even cannot see clearly; and those who do see, are absorbed in their own hobbies or miseries and don not bother to speak to her. You cannot imagine what big difference a honest praise such as “Danny, you look so pretty today” or “I like your sweater” makes. Gently, I put on red lip sticks and sparkling nail polish for her which brings her radiance back. “Thank you! Thank you!” she said in excitement and great happiness, showing the most beautiful smile I have ever seen.
My heat is ignited by the sparkles of pleasure, and I am encouraged to work harder.
“Look at the roses on the wall! Aren’t they lovely” I exclaimed, while walking Danny in the hallway, this is actually a lovely health Centre, with neat white walls dotted with pink roses. Doors with bright colors lead to straight hallways where interesting pictures of dogs, cats, boats or people are hung. Unfortunately, no one really noticed them.
