History of Santa Barbara I am writing about the mural on the Vons Market. Its is on the corner of Victoria and Chapala Street, downtown Santa Barbara. The artist that made the mural is Joseph Knowles, its was created in the 1960, it cost 125,000.00 to make. I am writing about the panels that are on the mural. The mural explains about history in the Santa Barbara area. The mural is a brief overview of what has happened on this soil during the past 13,000 years, and the artistic style was the 1960’s style. There are 6 panel an you could only chose 3. So I chose to write about the Chumash, Spanish, an Modern Age. I am going to tell you facts an explain what I see in each panel. The Spanish brought an unimagined world and future to the very door of this Chumash home. Their dominant technology and ideas would change the land and its people forever. This also laid the foundation for the mission period. The Spanish established the Santa Barbara missions, in addition to the other 20 other missions up and down the “Camino Real”. They colonized the area, and the Rancho Period began. Looking at the Spanish panel, I see a guy in a robe, probably a priest. I see two native men doing work. They don’t look happy. I see a church, an it looks like they are adding on to the church. So look like the Spanish corrupted the Chumash to help them make churches an lead them away from their true roots. Anybody coming to the Santa Barbara area for the first time needs to see that. They didn’t really say what was going to happen to the mural, but what ever happens, they need to save that mural, or just have huge colored pictures in a museum. They should make a book out about the mural to gives people quick facts about Santa Barbara, an make some money off the tourist. Its just a thought its is sad to say that the mural will no longer be there. I didn’t even know about that mural an now I know about it, am upset because I am a Chumash Native American an I wanted to show my children that mural one of these day. Its weird to me now, but at least I found out about it, I guess that is all that
