Managers and HR Professionals at Sands Corporation: Friends or Foes? Case Study Columbia Southern University 1. What seems to be the main source of conflict between supervisors and HR department at Sands Corporation? Explain. There is an obvious conflict as well as confusion of roles and unequal balance of power at Sands Corporation. Sands’ leadership offers that their team of HR professionals can better manage personnel matters than supervisors. The supervisors feel that they have no decision making authority. Their basis for this is the result of a law suit involving one of their competitors. The competitor lost $5 million in a sexual discrimination suit. Sands executives believe that an experienced HR team can prevent this. They counter that front line supervisors are not knowledgeable enough in employment law to prevent legal issues that can be costly for the organization. 2. Do you believe that managers should be given more autonomy to make personnel decisions such as hiring, appraising, and compensating subordinates? I believe that managers should be given more autonomy to make personnel decisions such as hiring, appraising, and compensating subordinates. I think that a manager is more familiar with an employee’s performance and work ethic than the HR Team. Additionally, a manager is more able to motivate and challenge his or her team simply because they are familiar with not only the employees but the work that an employee does. On the other hand, there could be some potential drawbacks to granting manager autonomy to make personnel decisions. Some managers are not strong or professional enough to handle this responsibility.
