Because Genie never formed attachment, her level of speech was very low and even now, has not recovered as upon discovery she was kept in the care of many different psychologists and then was restored to her original home and kept under the care of her mother. Another case study which looks at privation is the study of the Czech twins. The Czech twins were kept in an unheated closest and discovered at age 7. Because of their lack of attachment, they were unable to walk or have a grasp of basic speech. Unlike Genie, the twins were fostered in to a loving home and therefore, recovered and now live normal lives.
Ian loved not knowing a single soul when he was there. “What had struck him most forcibly was the fact that when he walked down the street he hadn’t known anyone.” Pg 20. He found it liberating. His mother must have too, because she decided she wanted to leave Struan with Ian’s geography teacher, Robert Patterson. Ian’s mother had never really been there for him.
Sally felt that her family should stick together and figure out how to get the money back. After Sally’s dad passed away, it was really hard for Sally’s Mum to find a job and provide for the family. Aboriginals at this time were rarely given jobs and had to fight for one. This relates to “Villawood Mums” as the mums left all of their loved ones and their belongings in their home country and came to Australia with nothing. Both mums had no money, nowhere to live and didn’t have a job to receive an income.
Learning to read Both of my parents arrived to the United States as illegal immigrants with no real education past the sixth grade. With that being said, they weren’t given many opportunities. And so… like many immigrants of Latin America, they became field workers. By the time I was four my parents divorced. We were all placed in a homeless shelter for abused women.
Genie when found was a thirteen and a half year old teenager who had been locked away by her father since she was a small child. Genie's father claimed that his daughter was 'retarded' and that was the reason she was kept in privation. Genie was left alone most of the time and was unable to stand properly and speak. Psychologists say that Genie had lacked emotional care. This led to Genie not forming any attachments with anyone.
Lucy Stone was born on August 13, 1818 in West Brookfield, Massachusetts as 8 of the 9 children born to unknown parents. As a kid, women had no rights. As she was growing up, she spent all her time thinking and questioning the inequalities of women. As a child of a father who is against woman’s rights, Lucy received little education. Not many women of her day went to college.
For many reasons, and for Scout, she doesn’t remember her mother at all because she died when Scout was very little. The only “mother figure” that Scout has grown up around has been Calpurnia. For as long as Scout can remember. Calpurnia has been taking care of Jem and Scout when Atticus is at work and just wanting to read at night, she has been there to cook and take care of the kids. “If Mr. Finch doesn’t wear you out, I will.” (278) Calpurnia isn’t scared to give the kids a spanking.
Just as in Aaliyah’s case profile story, there were many fostering variables to her delinquency. It began with her struggle at home with family issues. She felt hopeless living with her “mother, step-father and younger siblings” (Siegel & Welsh, 2011, 2). Next came her escape to Colorado, yet she had no game plan, which left her homeless, without support, and money. With no home, money, and support, she began to tamper with drugs that led to her arrest and detainment.
Praveen Athukorala ENG 111 (15297) 9/20/14 In “One Being 17, Bright, and Unable to Read’’ by David Raymond and ‘’The Day Language Came in to My Life’’ by Helen Keller in both stories the authors talks about they struggle with language growing up. Like for example Raymond explain his struggles with dyslexic disorder, which make hard from him to reading and writing. In Helen Keller stories she was a women that lost her vision and hearing as an eighteen mouth old baby, and she wasn’t able to learn anything because she felt small amount of emotion. I find it really interesting that Raymond and I have similarities. I wouldn’t say I struggle with
The person in my family who stood out the most was my mother. Her father died when she was an infant so my grandmother had to go to work, leaving my mother and her two siblings alone. She spoke only Spanish, which made it difficult for her to want to stay in school. My mother ended up with only a third grade education and she never learned how to read. She was able to function well in life, making purchases at stores.
