Saint Joseph – Biography St. Joseph lived in Nazareth, Israel and was a descendant of the House of King David, the greatest king of Israel. He was a very humble worker and was a hard-working carpenter. He was the husband of Mary, the mother of Jesus, and he was also the foster father to Jesus. Joseph is a significant figure in Christianity, as followers believe him to be Jesus’ earthly father. Joseph also taught the craft of carpentry to Jesus. Since Joseph does not appear in Jesus’ public life, at his death, or resurrection, many historians believe Joseph probably had died before Jesus’ public ministry. We know Joseph was a man of faith. He was obedient to whatever God asked of him, while uncertain of the outcome. For example, when the angel appeared in Joseph’s dream and told him the truth about the child Mary was carrying, Joseph immediately, without hesitation took Mary as his wife. Joseph also loved and cared for Jesus, as his one concern was for the safety and well being for the child entrusted to him. He loved Jesus although Joseph was not his legitimate father, and cared for Jesus and loved him just as any father would for his own son. We also know Joseph respected God; he followed God’s commands in handling the situation with Mary and went to Jerusalem to have Jesus circumcised and Mary purified after the birth of her son.
