Safe Stances “One Stance, Three Uses” by Amaury Murgado is published in the October 2012 issue of Police. The article explores staying safe when confronting a suspect. The stance described in this article lowers an officer’s center of gravity and widens his or her platform. There are many styles of classical stances, the classical interview stance has your body and feet being bladed 45 degrees to the suspect, your feet should be shoulder width apart and your hands placed above your belt in a non-threatening position. From this stance you can step out with your lead leg or back with the rear in order to transition to a fighting stance. The shooting stance is a little different because there are 3 different styles the Weaver, Isosceles, or Weaverese which is a combination of Weaver and Isosceles. The Three-In-One-Stance was created by the author of this article, Amaury Murgado. This stance uses the body’s natural movements and stance to make it more comfortable to the officer. Naturally a person’s feet are around shoulder width apart and parallel to each other, Amaury decided that if you take a half-step back with your gun leg, bend your knees slightly and bring your hands up to the middle of your chest that it will be more comfortable and easier to transition into either a fighting stance or a shooting stance. Normally the toes of your back foot are in line with the heel of your front foot, but you can adjust it according to your personal comfort. From this article, I have learned that the biggest advantage of the 3 in 1 stance is that it focuses on how the body functions normally. Classical stances are harder to learn since you have to learn a lot of different stances with little or no transitioning training.
