The dreadful reality of death in war is present within the story, “The Things They Carried”. The story makes it obvious that the Alpha Company Squad was deeply moved by the effects of war. Lieutenant Cross, took the death of Ted Lavender personally and struggled with it. There are a couple symbols that we can take from Ted Lavender’s death. The reader of “The Things They Carried” can become engrossed it the story and become easily moved.
Violence Even though Hosseini has stated that he wanted to remind people of a peaceful Afghanistan, he also does the service of revealing the suffering the nation has experienced in a quarter century of conflict. Violence pervades the novel, even in the seemingly innocuous activity of kite fighting. Not only is kite fighting violent because it is a kind of battle, but boys injure their hands when they participate. This fact suggests that Afghanistan has become a place where joy cannot exist separately from pain; Afghans' memories of their homeland are tainted with suffering. The entire novel centers around a single act of violence, Hassan's rape, and the sin Amir commits by pretending that violence did not occur.

The poem ‘Dulce Et Decorum Est’ by Wilfred Owen is incredibly thought provoking and it effectively tells us about all the suffering that took place during WW1. The theme of this poem is War. The poem begins with stanza one. It opens by describing the young soldiers who are returning from a battle, and are physically and emotionally exhausted. It shows us this by comparing the soldiers who should be young and fit to old beggars under sacks.
Charles Yale Harrison’s novel Generals Die in Bed strips away the misconception that war and is glorious and in doing so strongly conveys to the reader the horrible reality that was the First World War Harrison emphasises the harshness of this reality through the constant bombardment of gruesome and desensitising events experienced by the Narrator. It was the horrors of World War II that inspired Kurt Vonnegut to write Slaughterhouse Five, a unique anti-war novel in which the main character, Billy Pilgrim, has become “unstuck in time” and travels simultaneously through phases of his life, concentrating on his shattering experience as an American prisoner of war who witnesses the firebombing of Dresden. Throughout this novel, Vonnegut uses scientific motif and narrative structure to cope with the emotional impact of war, enhancing the overall meaning that our existence is finite; death is the only constant. Kurt Vonnegut injects elements of science fiction with Billy’s belief in Tralfamadorians, aliens who have a four dimensional view that time does not flow, that all moments exist concurrently and it is only an illusion if they appear to have any linearity. After the unexpected death of his wife Valencia, Billy begins to seriously advocate this view for it helped him mitigate the pain of what seemed like wrongful death.

Similarly in Homecoming, it is illustrated the dehumanisation of war. “…mortuary coolness…deep-freeze…sorrowful…frozen sunset…wintering tree…bitter…grief…”through an extended metaphor, it is suggested the implications on the society from the death of thousands of loved ones; the coldness is symbolising the death, grief and struggling of society and the individual. It could be said that the books are "War Novels". The period in which the stories take place in is one of great political turmoil near the beginning of and during WW2. The war is the primary focus of the novels. It shapes the lives of all the characters, e.g. Briony in the war Hospital, Robbie at Dunkirk, and Stephen and Keith playing their war games.
As the poem progresses, Mikhail begins to mock the routine of war, (wakes the sirens…dispatches ambos…swings corpses through the air) therefore showing us the harmful effects of war. Dunya Mikhail portrays the realities of war through the use of personification and lack of punctuation. As you can see the structure of the poem almost resembles that of a list, creating the effect of life during the war, long and routine. Through the use of action verbs such as swings, summons and digs for example she is using this language to show what the war does by giving it human qualities (read examples). The start of the poem (read first 3 lines) has quite a sarcastic tone and I think this shows how she feels towards the military glorifying war, doing whatever they can to convince you to join.
“Owen makes remarkable poetry out of the greatest human tragedy of the twentieth century.” Discuss the ideas Owen conveys in these poems and the techniques he uses to explore them. Through a first-hand experience of the horrific events during World War One, Owen had the experience to witness human tragedy and the horror of war, thus having an impact of his idea of war based upon what he had seen for himself. These ideas of the twentieth century enhance Owen’s capability to write such remarkable poems out of the greatest human tragedy expressed throughout war. Two poems in particular that express this are “Dulce Et Decorum Est” and “Disabled”. These poems show many figurative methods and techniques which convey the feeling of human tragedy and the pity and horror of war.
