The word sacred looks very simple on the outside, but can be defined by a numerous amounts of synonyms and definitions. Some words that are connected to the word sacred are holy, blessed, consecrated, hallowed, or sanctified. Sanctified has a deeper meaning and that is when something is sanctified it is with that of God, just as sacred is too. Another idea that is associated with the big word, sacred, is Sacramental Awareness. By definition, Sacramental Awareness means being aware of the sacred, or sanctified. This is being aware that God communicates through many things, such as people, places, actions, events, and experiences in your own life. Every summer, since I was four I have swam for a summer swim club which is where I have spent all of my summers since then. The swim team has children ranging from ages four to eighteen. As an older member of the team it is our job to help and teach the younger children on the team. Which this is something I took very seriously and created a strong bond with mostly all of the younger children as I watch them grow swimming wise and as a person. One little girl, age 9 at the time, in particular who I became very close with, both swimming the same stroke, actually taught me something last summer. As the summer began, as well did the swim practices. I noticed that this particular girl, Grace, was not at any of the practices, confused I asked my coach where she was or if she wasn’t swimming this year. She reluctantly replied that she was diagnosed with cancer and was in the hospital receiving treatment and wouldn’t be able to swim this year. One day after I had got done practice, I was talking to my friends about our plans for that night right before I had to begin work. It was a very busy day and I wasn’t thinking about much besides what I had to do next. The swim club was packed and being a life guard it was a very hectic day at work. I was on my lunch break and I saw Grace slowly approaching me at the table. She said to me, “Kristen, I have a question…” and I replied, “Yeah Grace, what’s up?” She then proceeded to ask me if I could help her with butterfly in the pool, (this was both of our “strokes.”) I replied, without hesitation, “Of course!” As she was excitedly got undressed and got her goggles with a huge smile on her face, I realized God was present in this moment. It showed me the important things in life, not what I’m going to be doing that night, or when my next break was, or that I didn’t get to eat my lunch. I realized that Grace took joy in the sport of swimming and that I can take things for granted. Here in front of me was a child who was terribly sick, but still found the energy to want to learn new things. She taught me that even through the busyness in my life or the suffering the world God is present, and all is
